Requirement Update

Beginning January 1st, 2026, State and Federal law will require that all patients prescribed Schedule II, III, IV, or V medications (controlled substances) must be seen in person by their provider at least once every 12 months.

This change reflects the end of COVID-era waivers and a return to pre-pandemic regulations for controlled substances.

Most of the medications we prescribe (antidepressants, mood stabilizers, etc.) are not controlled substances and therefore do not require an in-person visit.

What Does This Mean For You?

If you are currently prescribed a controlled medication (Schedule II–V), you must have an in-person visit at least once every 12 months to continue receiving your prescription.

Common examples of controlled substances include:

  • Benzodiazepines: Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam)
  • Stimulants: Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin (methylphenidate derivatives), Adderall, Vyvanse (amphetamine salts), Provigil (modafinil)
  • Sedatives: Lunesta (eszopiclone), Ambien (zolpidem), Sonata (zaleplon)

What do you need to do?

  • If you have not had an in-person visit in the past 12 months, please schedule one before January 1st, 2026, to avoid any disruption in your prescriptions.
  • Patients who have not been seen in person within 12 months will be offered non-controlled medication alternatives until an in-person appointment can be scheduled.
If you have questions or need to schedule an appointment, please contact our office as soon as possible.
